Under consideration is construction of Wilsonville’s French Prairie Bridge for bike/ped use

The Oregon Department of Transportation, which hosted an open house last week in Wilsonville to provide an update on the I-5 Boone Bridge Replacement Project, is offering an opportunity for more community members to provide feedback that will inform the project.

Specifically, project leaders are seeking input from cyclists and pedestrians regarding their travel preferences as they begin consideration of whether to design bike/ped facilities on I-5 or support the City’s French Prairie Bridge Project, which would add a separate Willamette River crossing exclusively for use by cyclists, pedestrians and emergency vehicles. Comment is welcome until Dec. 1.

A virtual open house document (also available en español) articulates ODOT’s project goals and planning timelines. Dates for design, environmental review and construction of the project are several years away, and are dependent on funding availability.

Traffic congestion on and approaching Boone Bridge negatively affects traveler safety, freight movement and the economy. Vehicles changing lanes at the entrance and exit ramps closely together cause congestion and crashes, making travel slower and less reliable for auto drivers/ passengers and public transit users, as well as for trucks carrying freight.

Until Dec. 1, ODOT is accepting general comment from I-5 Boone Bridge commuters to inform design choices, including the inclusion of a southbound auxiliary lane to allow safer entry/exit for local traffic.

Technical reports and other documents related to the I-5 Boone Bridge Replacement Project are available here.
