City Council Report for April 17, 2017

At the April 17, 2017, City Council meeting Wilsonville Mayor Tim Knapp proclaimed the week of April 17–23 as “Wilsonville Wildcats Week” in honor of Wilsonville High School Boys Varsity Basketball team that won back-to-back 5A Boys Basketball State Championships in 2017 and 2016. In honoring the team Mayor Knapp stated, “The success of the Wilsonville Wildcats Boys Varsity Basketball team is indicative of the High School's overall commitment to athletic and academic excellence, and sportsmanship.” In addition to numerous individual and team awards, the team also displayed excellence in the classroom with an outstanding academic achievement of placing fourth in the 5A Boys Basketball Academic All-State Awards with an average GPA of 3.56.  The proclamation recognizes the high school team’s continued achievements both on the court and in the classroom.

 

Mayor Knapp also issued an Arbor Day proclamation recognizing the City’s 19th consecutive year earning the distinction of being named a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation and to celebrate the important role trees play in Wilsonville. At recent volunteer planting events in March and April in partnership with Friends of Trees and the Bee Stewards program approximately 250 volunteers collectively planted 700 trees and shrubs at the Willamette River Water Treatment Plant and in Memorial Park in order to improve Wilsonville’s natural areas and provide pollinators additional habitat .

 

The City also proclaimed the week of May 1–7 to be Construction Safety Week, to call attention to the important role that safety pays in the construction industry and building trades.

 

The City Council voted to continue two public hearings. The first public hearing regarding the 2017 Transit Master Plan update was continued until June 5, when a public hearing is planned. On Wednesday, May 10, the Planning Commission is also scheduled to have a public hearing on the Transit Master Plan. The other public hearing regarding the Frog Pond Concept Plan was continued until Monday, June 19, at which time a public hearing is planned.

 

At the meeting the Council also took action to appoint, Emily Bryant Utz, World of Speed’s Group Tourism Specialist, to a position on the Tourism Promotion Committee for a term expires on June 30, 2019.  The Committee is responsible for overseeing implementation of the Wilsonville Tourism Development Strategy and City-County tourism-development grant programs.

 

Under the Consent Agenda City Council passed a resolution authorizing the City Manager to approve a change order with an electrical contractor to complete additional street lighting improvements.

 

During work session prior to the meeting, the City Council heard reports and discussed a proposed resolution promoting inclusion,  the Basalt Creek Concept Plan update, the Frog Pond infrastructure funding, results of a Wilsonville Road truck traffic count study, an introduction to the now underway Parks and Recreation Master Plan..
