ADVISORY: Wednesday’s Invitation-Only Street of Dreams Event May Slow Afternoon Traffic

Stafford Rd. looking at Street of Dreams site

July 23, 2019 — This Wednesday, the Home Builders Association of Metro Portland unofficially kicks-off the 2019 NW Natural Street of Dreams with a ticketed “Block Party” event, 6-10 pm, to celebrate the opening of this year’s street.

Anticipating the arrival of several hundred guests during peak traffic time on Wednesday evening, the City is cautioning commuters to expect heavier-than-normal traffic near the event site at Boeckman Rd. and Stafford Rd.

Drivers are cautioned to expect delays or, if possible, to avoid driving in the area during Wednesday’s peak afternoon commute. The City has issued a traffic advisory through the Oregon Department of Transportation’s TripCheck system advising motorists to be aware of the potential delays.

The arterials expected to draw the most event traffic are Elligsen Rd (eastbound from I-5) and Stafford Rd. (from Elligsen Rd. southbound to event location). Other major roads likely to be impacted include Wilsonville Rd. (near Wilsonville High School) and Boeckman/Advance Rd.

“While we anticipate efficient entry to the event site, we recognize that the event places an unusual burden on traffic during the peak commute, and want people within our host community to be aware so they can adjust their travel as they see necessary,” said Mark Bisbing, Director of Events for the Home Builders Association.

Street parking is prohibited in nearby neighborhoods. The Home Builders Association anticipates ample on-site parking and has received permission from Community of Hope Church, adjacent the Street of Dreams, to route overflow parking to the church if it is needed.

For the Block Party event only, a Lyft/Uber rideshare pick up/drop-off location has been established on Boeckman Rd., west of the Stafford/Boeckman intersection. Rideshare users are encouraged to avoid Stafford Rd.

“The Block Party is the one Street of Dreams event that challenges organizers of the event each year,”  said Bill Evans, the City’s Communications and Marketing Manager. “The Home Builders Association has been transparent, they’ve worked with us to develop an efficient entry plan and provided assurances that the impacts lessen considerably for the remainder of the event because people are coming and going over the course of an entire day.”
