Starting on Monday, June 15, the City begins construction of three landscaped medians on SW Wilsonville Road between Wilsonville High School and Boeckman Road. A southbound lane closure and detour is scheduled for Wilsonville Road from Boeckman Road to Meadows Loop weekdays from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. during the five-week-long construction project. Southbound traffic along the less than ¼ of a mile long section of the road is to be detoured to Canyon Creek Road and Town Center Loop East before coming back to Wilsonville Road. Originally the detour route was along Willow Creek and Meadows Loop, but the route was changed to minimize the impact on residential neighborhoods.
Project Manager Eric Mende said that, “Due to traffic that tends to use northbound Wilsonville Road when I-5 is backed up, we felt a northbound detour through the neighborhoods was an unacceptable safety risk.” A map of the detour route is attached and is also available online at www.ci.Wilsonville.or.us/RoadConstruction.
The traffic-calming and beautification project advanced by the City Council is being constructed in response to neighborhood concerns. “Not only will the roadway look nicer, but research shows that roadways with landscaped medians slow traffic,” explains Community Development Director Nancy Kraushaar. Traffic speeds on Wilsonville Road near the high school are a long-standing concern of area residents.
During the road detour period, residents along the detour route should expect to see increased traffic. Along the detour route the City reminds all drivers to follow the posted speed limit. Motorists are urged to slow down and use extra caution and should also expect to see more police patrols. Trucks are advised to avoid the area if possible. The City regrets the inconveniences that this road project and detour causes local residents and businesses, and is committed to completing the project as quickly and safely as possible.
